Rachel Barker

Rachel is the Chief Executive Officer of Plastics NZ. Starting her career as a mechanical engineer, she has a strong technical background in new product development, plastics processing and polymers.

Her current role leading an industry association allows her to work on areas of keen interest such as driving the successful transition to a circular economy for plastics in Aotearoa and supporting the manufacturing industry to achieve greater success. Rachel believes that a collaborative approach, backed by strong evidence, is critical for success and actively develops strong connections with stakeholders.
Rachel also participates in the Advanced Manufacturing Industry Transformation Plan Steering Group, the Manufacturing Alliance, steering and working groups for various product stewardship schemes, and a number of industry advisory groups. Internationally, Rachel is involved in industry advocacy relating to negotiation of multi-lateral agreements such as the United Nation’s plastics treaty, and the International Maritime Organisation’s proposals on international shipping of plastics.
