Wrapping up an awesome week at Ignite Engineering Camp

Ignite Engineering Camp 2026 – Week in Review

We are delighted to share the highlights and outcomes of this year’s Ignite Engineering Camp hosted at the University of Auckland Engineering School, a week dedicated to inspiring year 11 to 13 high school students to explore the exciting and often unseen world of modern manufacturing.

Camp facts:

Shining a Light on the “Invisible” Manufacturing Sector

Throughout the week, students gained insight into the high‑tech, innovative, and impactful work happening behind the scenes in Aotearoa New Zealand’s manufacturing industry. From precision engineering to product development and advanced materials, participants discovered how much of the sector operates quietly but critically in the background of everyday life.

Presentations from industry leaders, hands‑on activities, and guided discussions helped students build a rich understanding of the variety and scale of opportunities available within this essential and growing sector.

Exploring Alternative Pathways

A core objective of the camp was to highlight alternative pathways into engineering and manufacturing — including apprenticeships, vocational learning, and direct industry entry points. By hearing real stories from apprentices, graduates, and engineers across different companies, students saw firsthand that there are many ways to build a successful and meaningful career.

This exposure broadened their understanding of possible futures and helped many students identify pathways aligned with their strengths and interests.

Growing Knowledge, Skills, and Confidence

One of the most rewarding outcomes of the week was watching students grow — not just in knowledge, but in confidence. Daily interactions with industry representatives allowed them to ask questions, challenge their thinking, and engage more deeply with the material.

These multiple connection points created a safe, supportive environment where students felt empowered to participate, collaborate, and imagine themselves within the industry.

By the end of the week, we saw students who were more curious, more informed, and more self‑assured about their potential career journeys.

Industry Engagement That Makes a Difference

Advancing Manufacturing Aotearoa extends a heartfelt thank‑you to our industry partners who generously shared their expertise, opened their workplaces, and invested time in meaningful conversations with the students. Industry support plays a vital role in shaping the next generation of engineers and manufacturers.

The camp’s success is a direct reflection of the collaboration between education providers and industry leaders who believe in empowering young people with real‑world exposure and guidance.
